Mumbai Coastline, India

Situated on a natural port island on the east coast of India, Mumbai is the most populous urban metropolis in the world. The city, capital of the state of Maharashtra, is also the country's commercial centre. Its name was changed from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995, although the former is still used. An archipelago of seven islands, the city derives its name from Mumbadevi, Hindu goddess of the fishermen Koli, the oldest inhabitants of Bombay. The city, once an adornment of British Neo-Gothic architecture, is now a dazzling array of skyscrapers and traditional mud shacks, bringing to life traditional cultures and customs old and new. Once a gift to Charles I on his betrothal to a Portuguese princess, it is the Hollywood executive´s paradise, the poor man´s heaven, and the town planner´s hell. A disciplined city day and night, Mumbai is a kaleidoscope of museums, temples and eateries, each offering something new and exotic. Only by visiting Mumbai will you discover its sublime essence and spirit.
